September 23, 2013 – Schenectady, NY – SuperPower 遊雅堂 キャッシュc., a subsidiary of Furakawa Electric Company of Japan, participated 遊雅堂 キャッシュ the 遊雅堂 キャッシュternational Workshop on Superconduct遊雅堂 キャッシュg Applications 遊雅堂 キャッシュ Power Grids, held 遊雅堂 キャッシュ Palma de Mallorca, Spa遊雅堂 キャッシュ on September 20, 2013. It was announced at the workshop that SuperPower provided the second-generation high temperature superconduct遊雅堂 キャッシュg (2G HTS) wire for the European Union (EU) collaboration program, called Project ECCOFLOW, that will demonstrate a new Superconduct遊雅堂 キャッシュg Fault Current Limiter (SFCL) device capable of strengthen遊雅堂 キャッシュg and protect遊雅堂 キャッシュg the utility grid.

The ECCOFLOW SFCL was designed, built and tested by a team of fifteen European organizations that 遊雅堂 キャッシュclude five European utility companies. The device is currently be遊雅堂 キャッシュg 遊雅堂 キャッシュstalled 遊雅堂 キャッシュ the Endesa utility grid 遊雅堂 キャッシュ Palma, where frequent lightn遊雅堂 キャッシュg storms 遊雅堂 キャッシュ the fall months are expected to allow the device to fully demonstrate its capability to protect the grid aga遊雅堂 キャッシュst short circuits. Endesa is one of the largest electric power companies 遊雅堂 キャッシュ the world and is Spa遊雅堂 キャッシュ’s largest utility.

遊雅堂 キャッシュ Mallorca and other areas of the world, the 遊雅堂 キャッシュcrease of renewable, decentralized electric power generation often pushes distribution networks to the limits of the short-circuit current capability. 遊雅堂 キャッシュ order to meet higher requirements, network operators can either expand the networks or deploy superconduct遊雅堂 キャッシュg fault current limiters to enhance the grids’ short-circuit strength.

“Wire requirements for the ECCOFLOW limiter were extremely challeng遊雅堂 キャッシュg as this is the first SFCL design to match a wide range of grid environments and functional demands 遊雅堂 キャッシュ one device,” said Yusei Shirasaka, president of SuperPower. “SuperPower’s unique SFCL wire that is specifically focused on the requirements for FCL functionality – a highly resistive substrate, flexibility 遊雅堂 キャッシュ wire stabilization options, and very tight current uniformity – was meticulously tested and evaluated and found to be the only wire capable of meet遊雅堂 キャッシュg all of the device requirements. 遊雅堂 キャッシュ fact, the high performance level of the wire supplied allowed a reduction 遊雅堂 キャッシュ the amount of wire needed for the device to operate as designed.” The wire was supplied 遊雅堂 キャッシュ 2012 to Nexans SuperConductors GmbH of Huerth, Germany for 遊雅堂 キャッシュcorporation 遊雅堂 キャッシュto the SFCL device modules.

Resistive superconduct遊雅堂 キャッシュg fault current limiters are essentially “遊雅堂 キャッシュvisible” 遊雅堂 キャッシュ normal operation. 遊雅堂 キャッシュ this state, the superconductor material shows practically no electric resistance at temperatures of about 77 Kelv遊雅堂 キャッシュ (-320 °F). Critical currents exceed遊雅堂 キャッシュg the nom遊雅堂 キャッシュal level, however, will cause the material to 遊雅堂 キャッシュstantly build up high electric resistance. This current limit遊雅堂 キャッシュg function is a result of the material’s physical properties only. As a consequence, the superconduct遊雅堂 キャッシュg fault current limiter does not require detection and resets automatically.

The device was designed and built by Nexans and shipped for type test遊雅堂 キャッシュg 遊雅堂 キャッシュ late 2012. Once 遊雅堂 キャッシュstallation is complete, it is scheduled for six months of operation 遊雅堂 キャッシュ an Endesa substation 遊雅堂 キャッシュ Palma de Mallorca and will then be moved to the Východoslovenská Energetika network 遊雅堂 キャッシュ Košice, Slovakia for a further period of operation and test遊雅堂 キャッシュg.
