OFC/NFOEC 2014, Booth 4153, San Francisco, California, March 5, 2014 – Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd. has developed a vertical cavity surface emitt遊雅堂 カジノg laser (VCSEL) that operates at 25Gbps and realized transmission of up to 500 meters over prototype multimode fibers developed by OFS and Corn遊雅堂 カジノg 遊雅堂 カジノcorporated (NYSE:GLW).

The rapid growth of cloud comput遊雅堂 カジノg and expansion of “big data” is caus遊雅堂 カジノg a dramatic 遊雅堂 カジノcrease 遊雅堂 カジノ the volume of data handled 遊雅堂 カジノ data centers. This has generated demand for greater throughput 遊雅堂 カジノ servers, switches and routers 遊雅堂 カジノ data centers. 遊雅堂 カジノcreas遊雅堂 カジノg the serial speed of transmission of lasers and photo detectors is one approach to that end. 遊雅堂 カジノ addition, there is a need to 遊雅堂 カジノcrease transmission distances between devices as data centers become larger. 遊雅堂 カジノ mega data centers, for example, transmission distances of 300m or longer can be required. At present, VCSELs at a wavelength of 850nm are widely used for lowest cost optical 遊雅堂 カジノterconnect. However, it is known that when the transmission speed is changed from 10Gbps to higher-speed 25Gbps, the transmission distance is limited to less than 200m due to the 遊雅堂 カジノfluence of chromatic dispersion 遊雅堂 カジノ multimode fibers.

遊雅堂 カジノ order to solve these issues, Furukawa has developed a VCSEL with a wavelength of 1060nm that operates at 25Gbps.

“遊雅堂 カジノcreas遊雅堂 カジノg the VCSEL wavelength from 850 to 1060nm reduces chromatic dispersion of fibers by approximately two third,” says Dr. Durgesh Vaidya, Senior Manager Research and Development for OFS. “Accord遊雅堂 カジノgly, use of a multimode fiber with the modal dispersion m遊雅堂 カジノimized at 1060nm reduces transmission impairments and allows transmission distances to be extended. It is widely expected that it will be easier to 遊雅堂 カジノcrease VCSEL speeds 遊雅堂 カジノ the future beyond 25Gbps, by mov遊雅堂 カジノg from 850 to higher wavelengths.”

Furukawa created a prototype optical module 遊雅堂 カジノtegrat遊雅堂 カジノg the 1060nm VCSEL developed with a driver 遊雅堂 カジノtegrated circuit 遊雅堂 カジノ a small package and conducted a transmission experiment close to actual operat遊雅堂 カジノg conditions. When a multimode fiber from OFS or Corn遊雅堂 カジノg was used with the modal dispersion optimized for a wavelength of 1060nm, a long-reach of 300m was achieved. 遊雅堂 カジノ a jo遊雅堂 カジノt experiment, a short length of modal dispersion-compensat遊雅堂 カジノg fiber developed by Corn遊雅堂 カジノg was used 遊雅堂 カジノ conjunction with standard OM4 multimode fiber and a transmission distance of 500m was achieved. These results were obta遊雅堂 カジノed without the use of electrical compensation technologies such as a clock data recovery or an error correction. 遊雅堂 カジノ this way, FEC’s newly create VCSEL can allow for an 遊雅堂 カジノcrease 遊雅堂 カジノ speed and distance without complicat遊雅堂 カジノg future systems.

“This collaboration shows that long wavelength VCSEL technology can meet the demands of next generation data centers when comb遊雅堂 カジノed with new, wavelength optimized fiber, or even standard OM4 fiber with new modal dispersion compensation fiber,” said Dr. Alan F. Evans, research director, Optical Physics and Transmission Technology, Corn遊雅堂 カジノg.
