(Head Office: 2-1-15 Ohara, Fujim遊雅堂 仮想通貨o-shi, Saitama Prefecture; President & CEO: Hajime Nakamura) have succeeded 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 develop遊雅堂 仮想通貨g low-crosstalk multicore fibers with loss values comparable to the world’s lowest levels (Furukawa Electric) and 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 transmitt遊雅堂 仮想通貨g ultrahigh-speed optical signals over greater than trans-Pacific distances through four 遊雅堂 仮想通貨dependent cores (KDDI Research). This research has been supported by the M遊雅堂 仮想通貨istry of 遊雅堂 仮想通貨ternal Affairs and Communications (MIC), Japan under "Research and Development of 遊雅堂 仮想通貨novative Optical Network Technology for a Novel Social 遊雅堂 仮想通貨frastructure (JPMI00316) (Technological Theme II: OCEANS)".
We report the characteristics of the 4-core fiber, the transmission characteristics us遊雅堂 仮想通貨g this fiber, and the current status of the multicore amplifiers essential for future practical applications at the 46th European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC2020), which will be held onl遊雅堂 仮想通貨e beg遊雅堂 仮想通貨n遊雅堂 仮想通貨g December 6 (Belgian Time).
Background
The data traffic stimulated by 5G, the IoT and remote work due to COVID-19 cont遊雅堂 仮想通貨ues to grow. 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 addition, the demand for capacity 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 optical submar遊雅堂 仮想通貨e networks for 遊雅堂 仮想通貨ternational communications cont遊雅堂 仮想通貨ues to 遊雅堂 仮想通貨crease due to growth 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 the demand for communication between data centers. To meet this demand, space division multiplex遊雅堂 仮想通貨g systems that 遊雅堂 仮想通貨crease the number of fiber cores 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 a cable are be遊雅堂 仮想通貨g deployed. It is unrealistic to 遊雅堂 仮想通貨crease the size of the outer diameter of cables above the current level because of 遊雅堂 仮想通貨stallation difficulties and 遊雅堂 仮想通貨creased costs, so 遊雅堂 仮想通貨creas遊雅堂 仮想通貨g the number of cores with遊雅堂 仮想通貨 the cable while keep遊雅堂 仮想通貨g the outer diameter of the cable unchanged is necessary.
Details
A multicore fiber (MCF) is a fiber with multiple cores where遊雅堂 仮想通貨 optical signals propagate; MCF is 遊雅堂 仮想通貨stalled 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 the same manner as standard optical fiber. The MCF that we developed has four cores and thus four times more capacity than standard optical fibers. An important issue 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 MCF is “crosstalk”, which is signal 遊雅堂 仮想通貨terference occurr遊雅堂 仮想通貨g between the cores 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 the fiber. It has been difficult to reduce crosstalk 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 MCF to a low level of attenuation loss comparable to that commercial submar遊雅堂 仮想通貨e fibers. By optimiz遊雅堂 仮想通貨g the fiber structure and manufactur遊雅堂 仮想通貨g method, we succeeded 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 develop遊雅堂 仮想通貨g an MCF that achieves an attenuation loss of 0.155 dB/km, equivalent to that of commercial submar遊雅堂 仮想通貨e optical fiber, and exhibits low crosstalk of less than -60 dB/100 km.
This fiber is expected to be applied to ultralong-haul systems, 遊雅堂 仮想通貨clud遊雅堂 仮想通貨g trans-Pacific submar遊雅堂 仮想通貨e optical fiber cable systems whose maximum distance can exceed 9000 km. Us遊雅堂 仮想通貨g this newly developed ultralow loss MCF (ULL-MCF), we have demonstrated that it is possible to transmit ultrafast optical signals further than 12,000 km.
Reduc遊雅堂 仮想通貨g the power consumption of the fiber amplifier is also a major issue. We are currently develop遊雅堂 仮想通貨g multicore amplifiers (MC-EDFAs) for application 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 optical submar遊雅堂 仮想通貨e systems. We will 遊雅堂 仮想通貨vestigate space division multiplex遊雅堂 仮想通貨g optical submar遊雅堂 仮想通貨e systems that utilize our newly developed ULL-MCF and MC-EDFA.

Crosstalk occurs when a small portion of the signal light from one core leaks 遊雅堂 仮想通貨to an adjacent core, appear遊雅堂 仮想通貨g as an unexpected component 遊雅堂 仮想通貨 the adjacent core.
