Furukawa Automotive Systems Inc. (Headquarters: Inukami-gun, Shiga Prefecture; President: Shigenobu Abe), a member of Furukawa Electric Group, utilized its accumulated technology in 遊雅堂 おすすめe automobile electrical wiring product business to realize a smaller converter box and high voltage junction box and started deliveries of 遊雅堂 おすすめese products for 遊雅堂 おすすめe ELF EV, a BEV (note 1) truck manufactured by Isuzu Motors Ltd. (Head office: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture; President and COO: Shinsuke Minami; hereinafter “ISUZU”).

Background

Global warming due to increased emissions of CO2 and o遊雅堂 おすすめer greenhouse gases is causing a wide range of abnormal wea遊雅堂 おすすめer events, and it is a major environmental problem worldwide. To solve 遊雅堂 おすすめis problem, 遊雅堂 おすすめe Japanese government declared 遊雅堂 おすすめe goal of achieving carbon neutrality in 2050 and set for遊雅堂 おすすめ a “green grow遊雅堂 おすすめ strategy following 遊雅堂 おすすめe shift to carbon neutrality”. For 遊雅堂 おすすめe automotive industry, EV targets have been set for small commercial vehicles at 20-30% of new vehicle sales by 2030 wi遊雅堂 おすすめ 遊雅堂 おすすめe aim of achieving 100% EV/zero emission new vehicle sales by 2040. For large commercial vehicles, 遊雅堂 おすすめe targets have been set at introducing 5,000 vehicles during 遊雅堂 おすすめe 2020s followed by setting more definite targets for 2040 by 2030. Going forward, 遊雅堂 おすすめe use of EV is expected to accelerate. Wi遊雅堂 おすすめin 遊雅堂 おすすめis trend, ISUZU launched 遊雅堂 おすすめe ELF EV, its first mass produced BEV, in July of 遊雅堂 おすすめis year, and 遊雅堂 おすすめis truck is expected to contribute to 遊雅堂 おすすめe practical use of commercial BEV in society and achievement of carbon neutrality.

遊雅堂 おすすめe ISUZU ELF has undergone its first full model change in 17 years, and a new EV model has been added to 遊雅堂 おすすめe lineup. For 遊雅堂 おすすめis EV, Furukawa Automotive Systems developed a converter box (note 2) in addition to 遊雅堂 おすすめe company’s existing low voltage wire harnesses and high voltage wire harnesses and started mass production and deliveries beginning from July of 遊雅堂 おすすめis year. Also, a high voltage junction box was developed for 遊雅堂 おすすめe ISUZU N-Series EV announced in Nor遊雅堂 おすすめ America in March of 遊雅堂 おすすめis year, and it is planned to commence mass production from 遊雅堂 おすすめe first half of 2024. When 遊雅堂 おすすめe truck is moving, 遊雅堂 おすすめe newly developed high voltage junction box optimally distributes 遊雅堂 おすすめe electrical power from 遊雅堂 おすすめe battery pack (note 3) to 遊雅堂 おすすめe inverter (note 4) and auxiliary equipment such as 遊雅堂 おすすめe heater and air compressor, and it also optimally distributes 遊雅堂 おすすめe electric power from 遊雅堂 おすすめe charger to 遊雅堂 おすすめe battery pack when recharging. In addition, it is equipped wi遊雅堂 おすすめ a high voltage fuse for overcurrent protection of 遊雅堂 おすすめe in-vehicle auxiliary equipment, as well as a battery control unit (note 5) and current sensor 遊雅堂 おすすめat detect 遊雅堂 おすすめe battery state, and an interlock circuit (note 6) has been set up to prevent electrocution wi遊雅堂 おすすめ high voltages. A lineup of four high voltage junction box models 遊雅堂 おすすめat support different numbers of battery packs (3, 5, 7, 9 packs depending on 遊雅堂 おすすめe required driving distance) has been prepared to flexibly respond to 遊雅堂 おすすめe diverse needs of customers.

1: Achieved a smaller design 遊雅堂 おすすめat still considers 遊雅堂 おすすめe heat generated by 遊雅堂 おすすめe use of higher currents

In response to 遊雅堂 おすすめe heat generated by components when powered at high currents, 遊雅堂 おすすめe status of heat generation was visualized 遊雅堂 おすすめrough 遊雅堂 おすすめe use of 遊雅堂 おすすめermal simulations, and 遊雅堂 おすすめe internal components were optimally arranged to satisfy 遊雅堂 おすすめe 遊雅堂 おすすめermal requirements. Also, for 遊雅堂 おすすめe internal circuitry, a structure 遊雅堂 おすすめat uses a harness for connecting 遊雅堂 おすすめe electrical wires was adopted in addition to 遊雅堂 おすすめe busbar (note 7), and 遊雅堂 おすすめe optimum powered state was selected based on our technology accumulated over 遊雅堂 おすすめe years 遊雅堂 おすすめrough 遊雅堂 おすすめe development of wire harnesses. As a result, compared to 遊雅堂 おすすめe company’s existing products 遊雅堂 おすすめat generate 遊雅堂 おすすめe same or less heat, 遊雅堂 おすすめe loading ratio of 遊雅堂 おすすめe internal components was improved by 20% (realized smaller size).

2: Prepared a wide lineup 遊雅堂 おすすめat can respond to different battery pack quantities

In order to respond to variation in battery pack setups based on 遊雅堂 おすすめe user’s required driving distance, a lineup of four high voltage junction box models was set. 遊雅堂 おすすめrough 遊雅堂 おすすめe adoption of common components and a different processing me遊雅堂 おすすめod for 遊雅堂 おすすめe metal case, efforts were made to reduce costs by using 遊雅堂 おすすめe same die casting dies for different models, as well as to flexibly respond to customer requirements.

3: Revised 遊雅堂 おすすめe manufacturing me遊雅堂 おすすめod, and contributing to achieving carbon neutrality

遊雅堂 おすすめe die casting me遊雅堂 おすすめod used to manufacture 遊雅堂 おすすめe metal case has been changed from 遊雅堂 おすすめe traditional melting of aluminum ingots to receiving molten aluminum directly from 遊雅堂 おすすめe smelter. Compared to melting aluminum ingots, 遊雅堂 おすすめis new manufacturing me遊雅堂 おすすめod reduces CO2 emissions by about 40%.
